State Lawmakers Seek to Revive Bans on Corporate Control of Medical Providers

Healthcare Transactions attorney John Saran was cited in a WSJ Pro Private Equity article analyzing proposed state legislation to restrict the corporate practice of medicine and explaining how this could affect private equity investors. California, Oregon and Vermont have introduced bills prohibiting corporate investor influence in healthcare, and states ranging from New Mexico to South Carolina have put forward various proposals to limit corporate involvement. Mr. Saran commented that so far, the Oregon and Vermont bills are the strictest of the bunch, most of which intensify scrutiny of healthcare mergers. He added that the proposed laws "chip away" at the structures private equity firms use to invest in healthcare, which has drawn opposition from the industry.
